About Ellis County Relay For Life

"One Light, One Night, One Community Cancer Fight."  That's the theme
of the 2003 Ellis County American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life"
June 6 and 7 at the Felten Middle School track in Hays.
The 2002 "Relay for Life" was the most successful in the
eight-year history of the event.  More than $104,000 was raised
with the help of 54 teams, 55 corporate sponsors and countless volunteers.
Nearly half (43%) of the money raised by the American Cancer Society
is used to help fund cancer research.  Among many detections and
treatments, the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen is a result of ACS research.
The University of Kansas and Wesley Medical Center operate two Kansas
research hospitals that receive a portion of the monies raised.
Patient services receive 12% of ACS donations.  In Ellis County,
cancer patients at Hays Medical Center receive the nutrition supplement
"Ensure" which is paid for by ACS.  The patients also ACS funded wigs,
various medical equipment and mileage reimbursement for trips from their
homes to their doctors.
Another 13% of ACS funding is used for public education about cancer
prevention and early detection to reduce its effects.
"Relay for Life" is more than a fundraiser.  It's a challenging team
event that reaches into communities to bring friends and families together
to celebrate those who have survived cancer and to remember those who have
not.
Teams are composed of 8 to 12 participants.  At least one team member
is on the track walking, jogging, skating or strolling for the duration of
the 12-hour relay.  Each team is encouraged to have a decorated campsite
theme.  When team members aren't on the track, they join in other fun
activities, games and celebrations. This year's "
Relay for Life" will
incorporate a community block party theme.
